To provide. Speaking to them is like speaking to the trees or the sky. It’s like saying a prayer. I am in a desert where every leaf and blade of grass is a sand castle. Every wall and chair. But people can’t be made of sand. The only thing that can’t be. And I’m not good enough to sculpt one.” -How to Be AloneAll the literature I’ve ever seen kept giving me the same antiquated ideas. “Don’t worry bout it!” or “It’ll pass, embrace life!” What the fuck does that mean?

I filled my head with empty exclamations and non answers spouted by those who have never really been there (and then who had the brilliant idea to write books on it). I think we deserve better than promises that you’ll be better simply by ignoring the problem. This book is a how-to on how I became alone and then continued on living with it.

It’s a step by step guide on how to panic with grace, fall with elegance, and think about loneliness by way of examination and exploration. Loneliness is a psychosis, a development, and a state. Of which I’ve found the last of these to be the most important. Loneliness isn’t something you solve by ignoring.

It’s something you solve with literature. It’s something you solve faced down with fists raised. It’s different for everyone. I think that’s what’s key. This book is my lock pick of an idea to walk through my own closed doors. Hopefully I make it to other side.
